trafalgar lions

Here's my little lion. I had an 8x10 board with a pencil sketch on it that I was terrified to paint. It sat in the corner for 2 months. It's actually a good reference, since there isn't enough detail for me to get hung up on. I can concentrate on values.

My angel still needs his halo of hair highlights, and I think I can push the darks further. But I'm happy. Very happy.

I had two false starts today (trying to re-work old stuff, a big mistake) and I felt a little lost. An encouraging message from Dianne Mize was just what I needed to persevere.

Hmm, how about the Mamas and the Papas for Dianne. Sometimes I have felt displaced in time, a hippy born 20 years late.

A hippy born too late? You can probably catch up if you take enough drugs.

Keep painting and share your failures and successes with us. Just consider the failures as studies like I do.

I have artemisia in the garden. That's the absinthe plant. I can be a hippy Impressionist. I embrace the euphemism of 'study' too Bill.

Jeff, thanks for the compliment. Enjoy blogging. But watch out- it's addictive. Is absinthe?

"Absinthe makes the heart grow fonder", or so they say.

Thank you, Dar. And Monday, Monday is one of my Mamas and Pappas favorites. I've listened to the video 3 times already. And your work is growing by leaps and bounds. Don't worry about those false starts, they go with the territory.

Dar - would it make you feel better if I told you that I had a good sketch on a canvas that I have never felt brave enough to start that has sat in the corner of (now) four different studios over a period of almost 20 years.

I wonder if this scenario is common. I imagine artists have many reasons to stall on something, whether they're waiting to hone a particular skill, or maybe they've started on a concept that is so personal they have mixed feelings about trying to give it shape.
How do you feel about framing that one and calling it finished?
