marbled paper

I saw a marbling demonstration around 20 years ago, and became enchanted with the process. Manipulating the paint as it floats on a gelatinous liquid is a meditative activity, with immediate, breathtaking results. I researched technique and materials, which was no easy task. Marbling is one of those centuries old, family industries in which the artisan takes the information to his grave.

I taught myself to marble, and had pleasant results on both paper and silk. I put it aside when my babies were born. It is time to marble again. I found a studio space this past winter, and I've been gathering my supplies. Meanwhile, I started painting! I always have to have my hands into something.

Recently, I had the opportunity to attend a marbling workshop, a good jump start. The pieces pictured above are some of the 9x12 papers I produced.

Speaking of gelatinous liquid, we drove over the Cuyahoga River on our road trip to the workshop. We also made a pilgrimage to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I was in heaven! My kids indulged me when I made them listen to rock's early influences, like Bessie Smith and Robert Johnson. They didn't mind looking at every speck of Beatles memorabilia either, but I think they enjoyed the punk and glamrock displays the most.

I'm finally pushing a little paint today! It's more like scales than sonata, but I needed to jump in.
