ripe and ready

8x10 oil on panel

This painting is my first try with a gesso panel. It's very slick. Now I know what that means. I thought I was ice-skating. You'll just have to trust me that it looks more sophisticated in person, not so garish.

I took my painting for a walk, since I often get a better photo at home than studio . I ran into an artist-neighbor-friend who always asks me if I’ve been to the galleries with my work. I insist that I’ll be studying for a while first. She said, “You’re ripe and ready, like that apple.”

I picked these privet branches in my yard. Privet offers small white flowers in spring with a wonderful aroma. If you prune at the wrong time, you and the bees can’t enjoy them. In the fall, if any flowers were allowed to develop, small dark berries will form in tiny clusters. Privet leaves turn a great variety of colors. The leaves and berries are among autumn's visual pleasures that must be enjoyed up close. But don't nibble. They're toxic to humans.

This is a nice painting, Dar. I like the dark leaves. This slick surface can work well when painting over time. You can let it dry then glaze or scumble to get subtle changes.

Hi Bill, thanks.
I'll keep trying these boards. It's a very different sensation. Gessoed, for her pleasure.

Nice color scheme in this one - and so beautifully rendered.

Dar, this is a good one. I paint on those gessoboards and recently started using soft sable style brushes and a stand oil/gamsol medium. I compared it as you do, to ice skating with my brush. It's harder to lay the paint on without skidding across some well done passage or line. They look really glossy and nice though.
Thanks for your comment about my 'girlfriend' Nizzy.

Hi Mary, thanks. I will use soft brushes next time. I'm also gonna try adding an additional layer of gesso. I want it to work out, because sometimes I get tired of the canvas texture.
